About Akbarpur

Akbarpur city belongs to Ambedkar Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh. The city constitutes a municipal board. The city is situated on the banks of River Tamsa or Tons. The city is divided into Akbarpur and Shahzadpur due to River Tamsa. Shahzadpur locality is considered as the shopping and commercial hub of Akbarpur. As per Ramayana, Akbarpur is the actual location where King Dashratha, father of Lord Rama, shot Shravan Kumar. From then onwards, this place was known as “Shravan Kshetra”. Sage Shringi Rishi ashram is also located at Akbarpur. The Lorepur locality of the city is very popular for Imambargah and palace of Lorepur. People of all communities and castes reside at Akbarpur in which Hindus and Muslims are majority and almost equal in population. Hindi and Urdu are the chief spoken languages of the city.

Akbarpur is one of the 7 most important cities in Ambedkar Nagar district apart from Tanda, Jalalpur, Baskhari, Rajesultanpur, Ashrafpur Kichhauchha and Ramnagar Alapur. The city was formerly under Faizabad district, later in 1995 Akbarpur came under the newly formed Ambedkar Nagar district.

The city is elevated at a height of 133 meters which is about 436 feet. The city has its coordinates at 26.52° North latitude and 82.62° East longitude. Akbarpur is bounded by Katehari Tehsil in the west, Dostpur Tehsil in the South, Tanda Tehsil in the North and Bhiti Tehsil in the west. The child sex ratio in the city is 937 girls out of 1000 boys. Nearly 12.58 % of the total city population constitutes children. The total number of literates in the city are 75062, out of which male constitutes 42208 and female constitutes 32854. Thus, the average literacy rate in the city is 76.94 % in which the male literacy rate constitutes 83.89 % and female literacy rate constitutes 69.54 %. The city homes nearly 17720 houses. About 35156 people in the city are employed out of which male constitutes 25645 and female constitutes 9511. Out of the total working people, nearly 60.22 % are employed in main work and the rest of 39.78 % are engaged in marginal work. Nearly 50 % of the total population are Hindus, 48 % are Muslims, 1.4 % are Jains and rest of 0.6 % constitute Sikhs and Buddhists. About 13.74 % of the total population belongs to scheduled caste and 0.04 % of the total population constitutes Schedule Tribe.

Akbarpur is the home town of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, a renowned freedom fighter. He was born on March 23, 1910. He was also a social activist and a politician. He was well known for his contribution for Quit India Movement; he was jailed in 1944. He was also a close friend of former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
